Last May, the Parks Committee distributed a survey throughout Barron Park concerning the play structure at Bol Park. Our action was prompted by the unsafe conditions of the current play structure and its lack of compliance with upcoming Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) playground safety guideline requirements and the current provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Our thanks to the 70 families who filled out the survey. Below is a summary of the results: When asked whether or not a new play structure should be built, 90% responded positively. Most stated that they felt the current structure is unsafe, frustrating for young children, and full of splinters.
When asked why they do or do not want a new play structure, many supported the idea of developing a play structure that is natural and unique. Some want to keep the entire park natural, without a structure at all. However, it should be noted that the irrigated turf and bike path are just as unnatural as the play structure. Several reminded us to plan for older, as well as younger children. Others wanted to keep the current play structure, but only if it meets CPSC and ADA standards.
The idea of using natural and man-made materials in earth-tone and neutral colors drew a tremendous amount of support! Many responded that building a new play structure is a great idea, adding that families would use Bol Park more often. Eleven people volunteered to assist in planning a new play structure and seven said they would help build and install it.
Respondents commented that they supported building for older (grade-school age) kids, and having a separate play structure for younger kids. Comments encouraged us to be creative, develop something that sparks the imagination, add swings, a slide, tunnels, a maze, a balance beam and a hanging bridge. Some asked to keep it unobtrusive. Others prefer that we leave the current play structure and the park as they are.
We asked respondents the ages of their children, if applicable. Children age five and under made-up 49% of the total.
In response to the survey, a working committee was formed. We've met several times to brainstorm design ideas and discuss how to incorporate a safe and interesting play structure into Bol Park's unique setting. In future meetings we plan to walk Bol Park and begin drawings that bring together its natural elements. No structure will be changed or added without due public process with the city of Palo Alto.
We welcome new committee members any time. For information, please call Sue Benjamin at 852-1225.
